One powerful tool in the fight against fake news is artificial intelligence (AI)\, which can be used to automatically detect and respond to this content as well as empower users with the ability to verify the veracity of claims. The key objective is to prototype and review solution approaches to actual problems. \nThe expected participants are typically PhD/master students\, researchers and engineers specialized in computer science\, with some background or some strong interest in AI (Semantic Web\, Multi-agent systems) or the Web of Things. DESCRIPTION:WeNet will participate with Dr Andrea Passerini (UNITN) who will give a demo presentation on pyWMI\, a framework and toolbox for probabilistic inference in hybrid domains containing continuous and discrete variables and constraints between them. \n\nIJCAI 2019\, the 28th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. This will be the second time that IJCAI is held in China: the first time was 2013 in Beijing\, the capital of this large country. This time\, the conference will not take place on mainland China but in a former Western colony. The settlement of Macao by Portuguese navigators in the mid16th century laid the basis for nearly five centuries of uninterrupted contact between East and West. Macao is the single most consistent example of cultural interchange between Europe and Asia; the official languages are Chinese and Portuguese. Having developed into a bustling city with a worldwide reputation in entertainment\, Macao is also at the heart of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area\, which promotes its fast development in IT education\, research\, and industry in recent years. \nMacao is easy to travel to: it is connected directly to Hong Kong International Airport and Shenzhen International Airport by high-speed ferry\, which is only a 60 minutes journey. The longest bridge in the world connecting Hong Kong and Macao is supposed to be opened in late 2018; this will further reduce the transfer time. Macao International Airport is just located in the city center\, about five minutes drive to the hotel and convention centers. Macao can be entered without visa or with one issued on arrival for most countries; visitors from over 200 countries enjoy this policy. \nIJCAI 2019 will take place in the convention center of the Venetian Macao Hotel Resort\, which is located on the Cotai Strip\, the heart of modern Macao’s accommodation\, event and entertainment offerings. The Cotai Strip is a stretch of reclaimed land that now joins the islands of Coloane and Taipa. It is close to all the major entry points to Macao\, by land\, sea or air and with easy access to Macao’s many points of historical and cultural interest. Furthermore\, it provides modern infrastructure and a choice from thousands of rooms in a suite of hotels\, bars and lounges\, theatres\, shopping malls\, etc. Conference delegates will enjoy an evening reception at the beautiful new campus of the University of Macau and a banquet dinner at the world’s largest casino property. \nAttend IJCAI 2019\, and enjoy a unique city where far-east and west meet in long tradition\, while taking part in the leading Artificial Intelligence gathering. Pick the one you are most interested in… or join them all! \n\nValue-Driven Adaptive Norms\nConducted by Nardine Osman\, Researcher at IIIA-CSIC \nLocation: Barcelona\nDate: 26 September\, 2019\nTime: 12:00 to 13:00 (CEST) \nSynopsis\nNorms are the rules that govern behaviour in groups and societies. They motivate and influence individual actions by dictating what values\, beliefs\, attitudes\, and behaviours are deemed appropriate or not. Social norms have been extensively studied by anthropologists\, sociologists\, philosophers\, and economists in the hope of understanding how they motivate individual actions\, influence market behaviour\, and so on. In this workshop\, however\, we present norms from a multiagent system’s perspective\, where norms are usually used to regulate behaviour in distributed open systems. We provide an introduction to normative systems and the various mechanisms for regimenting and enforcing norms. We also present our roadmap that allows for adaptive norms that evolve with people’s evolving needs. Last but not least\, we illustrate how norms can help address some of the ethical requirements\, such as privacy\, control and transparency. \nDownload the slides here

DESCRIPTION:WeNet at the European Researchers’ Night in Cyprus\nOur colleagues from the Computational Cognition Lab of the Open University of Cyprus will showcase WeNet project at the European Researchers’ Night in Nicosia\, on Friday 27th September\, from 5pm a the Filoxenia Conference Centre. We will have the opportunity to engage the local research and education community (Research centres\, Universities\, Schools)\, participating to the event. \nThe event is organized by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) in collaboration with academic and research institutions as well as other organisations in Cyprus.\nThe event is an initiative of the European Commission and takes place simultaneously in almost all European countries. Audiences of different ages will have the opportunity to meet up with Cypriot researchers and see their work\, in a festive\, friendly atmosphere. In each stand researchers will present their work and inform the public about the role and importance of research in the modern world as well as the practical applications of their research results in everyday life. DESCRIPTION:The European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) is the main event of the European Big Data and Data-Driven AI Research and Innovation community. In 2017 the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) and the European Commission (DG CNECT) joined forces to create this event fusion of the former EDF (European Data Forum) and the BDVA Summit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year EBDVF2019 is by BDVA\, in collaboration of the European Commission and VTT as the main local organizer. The European Big Data Value Forum 2019 aims to continue the success of previous editions\, where on average every year around 700 industry professionals\, business developers\, researchers\, and policymakers coming from 40 different countries attended the event. It will be organised in October and we expect 600 participants. The organiser committee of this event includes\, in addition to BDVA\, the EC and VTT\, multiple Finnish industrial\, Innovation and Research players as well as international companies and other research institutions. \nBDVA is an Industry-driven and fully self-financed an international non–for-profit organisation under Belgian law. BDVA has almost 200 members all over Europe with a well-balanced composition of large and small and medium-sized industries (over 30% of SMEs)\, as well as research and user organizations. SUMMARY:Interdisciplinary Conference on the Relations of Humans\, Machines and Gender
DESCRIPTION:In numerous fields of science\, work\, and everyday life\, humans and machines have been increasingly entangled\, developing an ever-growing toolbox of interactions; and this is happening on a local\, regional and global level. These entanglements and interactions are changing the structures and practices of our working lives\, and they are modifying the way in which science and technology are organized. Furthermore\, the new practices\, entanglements\, possibilities and restrictions effect far-reaching changes in the lives and identities of human beings\, affecting – to name just a few aspects sex\, gender\, sexual identity\, age\, skin color\, migration\, or cultural background. These factors are both modified and modifiers in the ongoing new entanglements between humans and machines. \n \nThese questions have been tackled both in their complexity and in single case studies by PhD program “Gendered Configurations of Humans and Machines. Interdisciplinary Analyses of Technology” (in short: KoMMa.G); a joined program of Technische Universität Braunschweig\, Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences and Braunschweig University of Art\, sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Culture\, Lower Saxony. \n \nAfter almost three years of individual and collaborative\, interdisciplinary research\, we now want to bring our own perspectives and (preliminary) results into resonance with related research on an international level\, which is why we are organizing this conference. The conference aims at bringing together international researchers working on subjects in the fields of engineering\, technology\, humanities\, and the social and natural sciences\, who are interested in reflecting on interdisciplinarity/multidisciplinarity\, on science and technology studies\, as well as gender\, feminist\, queer\, intersectional\, and postcolonial studies. \nThe conference is divided into five panels considering the different yet connected dimensions of the conference topic. SUMMARY:Luiss Debates - Ethics in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Luiss Debates are created to foster interaction between scholars and the business community\, national and international institutions\, and different social actors. Thus\, by producing relevant and insightful knowledge that positively impacts the world\, they promote social sciences as actionable disciplines that can translate theories into social and economic progress. Over the past months\, Luiss Debates have been held on topics such as leadership\, artificial intelligence and innovation and sustainability.\nIn today’s debate\, Paolo Benanti\, Luciano Floridi and Giuseppe Italiano will share the stage to engage in a discussion on the ethical implications of technology in the digital age. \nPaolo Benanti is a Franciscan of the Third Order Regular from 1999. He has experience in the technical field with studies in Engineering and in the field of ethics with philosophical and theological studies. The doctoral research he has undertaken is meant to synthesize the competences acquired\, providing an original contribution to biomedical ethics. He works in academics as Professor in Moral Theology\, Bioethics and Neuroethics. At the same time he provides consulting in pastoral of healthcare and teaches refresher courses in bioethics for the training of parish workers. \nLuciano Floridi is OII‘s Professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Information at the University of Oxford\, Director of the Digital Ethics Lab of the Oxford Internet Institute\, and Professorial Fellow of Exeter College. He is Turing Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute and Chair of its Data Ethics Group\, Distinguished Research Fellow of the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and Senior Member of the Oxford Faculty of Philosophy\, and Research Associate and Fellow in Information Policy of the Department of Computer Science. His research concerns primarily Digital Ethics (aka Information and Computer Ethics)\, the Philosophy of Information\, and the Philosophy of Technology. \nGiuseppe F. Italiano is Professor of Computer science at Luiss University.  His background\, which includes also a five-year experience in industrial research\, puts him in a unique position to carry out work that combines basic research with strong focus on applications. In 2016 Giuseppe was nominated EATCS Fellow for his “fundamental contributions to the design and analysis of algorithms for solving theoretical and applied problems in graphs and massive data sets\, and for his role in establishing the field of algorithm engineering”. \nWelcome address by Professor Alessandro Zattoni Dean of the Luiss Department of Business and Management.

SUMMARY:Feminist Data Protection
DESCRIPTION:Forum Privacy (‘Forum Privatheit’)\, a German research project\, is hosting an exploratory\, multi-disciplinary\, one-day workshop on feminist approaches to data protection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe workshop is organised with the support of the Unabhängiges Landesdatenschutzzentrum Schleswig-Holstein (ULD)\, the International Center for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities (IZEW) and the Center for Gender and Diversity Research (ZGD) of the University of Tübingen and the Law\, Science\, Technology and Society Research Group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe notion of data protection has increasingly become a part of legal and political discourse in Europe\, as exemplified by the inclusion of a right to data protection in the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights. Yet there have been relatively few engagements in thinking and framing data protection from an explicitly feminist perspective. This stands in stark contrast to the notion of privacy\, with which data protection is often conflated and which has been the subject of extensive feminist critique\, particularly insofar as it relates to the distinction between public and private spheres. The starting point of this workshop is that the notion of data protection\, once disentangled from privacy\, warrants further examination from a perspective of intersectional feminism. \nData protection may be understood by considering the power imbalance with which individuals are confronted when their data are processed: public and private entities can collect data without the individuals’ knowledge and it is hardly possible for individuals to control their data\, once collected. The processing of data thereby creates inherent risks for individuals – particularly so for those already marginalized or subject to discrimination – and affects the distribution of power in our societies.  Thus data protection\, like feminism\, aims at theorizing and changing structural inequalities and power relations. We wish to discuss these structural issues as well as potential answers through the lens of emancipatory approaches\, such as feminist\, queer\, Marxist\, post-colonial\, critical race or disability studies perspectives. \nWe invite submissions on the topic of feminist and other emancipatory approaches to data protection addressing the power imbalance faced by individuals\, especially with regard to discrimination\, marginalization and oppression. We are interested in a wide variety of perspectives on the intersection between feminism and data protection\, both in Europe and beyond\, whether they are focused on mutual critique or on how either can benefit from the other and what their common or related aims could be. Topics of interest include\, but are not limited to: \n\nData protection and privacy: How can the relation between these “positive” notions in one discourse and the negative image of private space whose “legal vacuum” facilitates the exploitation of structural inequalities be analysed and brought into a dialogue?\nData activism\, digital rights\, and feminism: Around which issues are European and worldwide feminist initiatives focusing on data processing practices emerging? What are the intersections between such initiatives and data protection?\nCountering illegitimate data processing: How can women and marginalized groups profit from the networking effects of social networks in order to organize while being protected from the fallout inherent in their capitalist business models\, i.e. tracking and profiling?\nSurveillance: How is technology developed and used to oppress certain groups? What are the dangers disproportionately affecting women\, especially women of colour\, in the context of surveillance? How could or should surveillance be avoided\, subverted or countered?\nArtificial Intelligence and Big Data: Should these practices be conceived of as a form of automated and inherent discrimination or as tools for visualizing and countering existent discrimination? What biases are built into them\, and what are their regulatory effects?\nOnline gender ascription: How is information about gender being collected and processed? Which parameters determine gender ascription? Is the gender identity of individuals (including non-binary persons) respected\, and could data protection law further this cause?\nData processing and identity formation: What role do notions such as visibility\, hiding\, outing\, and performativity play in the context of data processing and reproduction of gender norms and gendered identities? Can and should data protection intervene in such processes?\nPractices of categorisation: How are categories constructed\, by which actors\, and what is their impact\, particularly for oppressed groups such as women? How are biases built into data systems by means of categorisation and how should we respond to this?\nData subjects and rights: Can we rethink notions of data protection law in ways which go beyond the neoliberal focus on the ostensibly gender-neutral\, self-determining individual? How can we go beyond data subject rights (e.g. group rights\, or other languages of resistance)?\n\nThe workshop will take place on Wednesday\, 20 November 2019 (before the annual conference of Forum Privacy\, taking place in Berlin from 21 to 22 November 2019). They are looking forward to intense discussions between around 10–15 participants\, each briefly presenting their submission. DESCRIPTION:14th Annual Meeting of the Internet Governance Forum\nThe Internet Governance Forum (IGF) was set up as an open discussion platform of the United Nations for key legal\, political\, social and technical issues relating to the internet. \nThe IGF is designed according to the “multi-stakeholder” model\, meaning that all the relevant societal groups are equally involved in preparations and implementation: from governments\, civil society\, business\, academia\, international organisations and the technical community. This is particularly of note in terms of representatives from developing and newly industrialising countries\, who otherwise tend to be under-represented. \n \nThe forum was established in 2006 by the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). The IGF does not make binding decisions\, but only serves in an advisory capacity. The annual meetings are held for the purposes of discussion\, information and inspiration\, with the primary objective of facilitating equitable and constructive dialogue between the various representatives\, and to play a role in shaping debate within the relevant decision-making bodies at a national and international level. \nGlobal trends relating to internet politics\, current draft legislation and established practices are regularly discussed at these meetings.
